History[]

Aang was born among the Air Nomads, peaceful monks who mastered the arts of Airbending. However, at a very young age, he discovered he was in fact the next incarnation of the Avatar, destined to master bending all four elements and bring balance to the world. Terrified of this new destiny, Aang ran away from home, crashed into the ocean, and got frozen in a glacier for 100 years.

During the time he was frozen, the world was without an Avatar, and the unimpeded Fire Nation managed to conquer most of the land. Knowing the new Avatar who could stop them would be an Air Nomad, their first targets where their homes and temples, where they slaughtered the remaining monks. Thus, when Aang was rescued, he came into the world as the last Airbender. Accepting his calling to bring balance to the world, and with the help of both friends and enemies, he mastered Water, Earth, and Firebending, became a full-fledged Avatar, and defeated the Fire Lord Ozai, bringing an end to a 100-year war.

Personality[]

Aang is over 100 years old, but still a child in body and heart during the show's first installment. He enjoys having fun, pulling pranks, and using his powers for entertainment. However, he eventually begins to take his position as the Avatar seriously, yet remains true to his pacifist upbringing. His attacks are preferably non-lethal, and designed to humiliate or incapacitate opponents rather than kill. He is also unorthodox, and full of surprises that can leave seasoned opponents stunned.

As an adult, Aang was very dedicated to his job as an Avatar, and as an airbending teacher, determined to uphold peace and bring back his people's culture. He was still an avid goofball, though.
