I've heard a great deal about you, Fa Mulan. You stole your father's armor, ran away from home, impersonated a soldier, deceived your commanding officer, dishonored the Chinese Army, destroyed my palace, and... you have saved us all.

History[]

Mulan was the only child of a small, but humble, family in rural China. Clumsy and independent, she proved difficult to find a suitor for, but her chance at honour came when the bloodthirsty Huns breached the Great Wall to invade China. With one man from every family required to join the army, and knowing her father's old age would ensure his death, Mulan cut her hair, stole his sword and armour, and ran away to join in his place. Her family's ancestors, worried for her safety, sent the guardian dragon Mushu to take care of her from behind the scenes. Posing as a man, and awkwardly assimilating with her fellow troops, Mulan eventually became accepted as "Ping", and stood out as one of the top soldiers under the command of Li Shang.

However, even after thwarting the Hun army with a rocket, Mulan's gender was eventually exposed: Li Shang spared her execution as repayment for her saving his life, and expelled her instead. On her journey home, she discovered the Hun leader Shan Yu had survived; hoping to stop him, she sped towards the Imperial City, where she made amends with her friends and led the defeat of the Hun army once and for all.

Personality[]

Mulan was awkward and out of place in her role as her family's daughter, expected to be gentle and romantic in order to attract a suitor. While headstrong and noble enough to join the army to save her father, her clumsiness proved a problem there too, where she struggled at first to become adept with weapons and strategy. Ultimately, her bravery and tenacity proved her strongest characteristics, and not only did she overcome the army's training, but she rallied her fellow troops into doing the same.

Even after being discovered, Mulan decided to remain true to who she was, and fought back against the Huns regardless, where her bravery was recognized in front of a crowd of thousands.
