History[]

"It's okay... I'm a cop." Francis was in fact not a cop, and this cover story wasn't enough to convince the patrolling officer or the jury to let Francis off the hook in the weeks building to the collapse of America amid the Green Flu epidemic. Due to his imminent prison sentence, Francis was enjoying what might have been his last night as a free man in a bar with friends. What should have been a great night went sour when his lady for the evening, Sandra (not Becky, as Francis kept calling her) turned into an infected during a steamy makeout session on the roof. She puked on him, bit him leaving poor Francis to wonder if her taking a crap on him was the next step. Instead, she completed her transformation before being shot dead by Duke. Despite being a conspiracy nutcase, Duke was right that the group would need to take up arms and defend themselves. They grabbed all the essentials for the night ahead - as Francis realised that everyone else was an Infected, he would not be going to prison. Beer, music and guns were all they needed as they picked off Infected and counted down from 1000.

It isn't clear what happens to Francis' buddies after that, though he does allude in a conversation with Zoey that if he had stayed with them he would have died within the opening week of the infection. He did end up meeting Bill, Zoey and Louis as the group attempted to escape Pennsylvania to the elusive 'Safe Zone'. First by helicopter, then boat, then plane and finally being picked up by the US Army itself, the survivors seemed to finally escape the dreaded hordes as they were brought to... a processing station called Millhaven? Goddammit! Good thing Francis had called all along how screwed they were, now he had something to keep talking about.

In his time in Millhaven, he and Louis would learn just how sheltered and uninformed the soldiers of the facility were about the Infection. They recalled their experiences and battles with the hordes and the Special Infected mutations that had made the advance to safety so hard. But when a coup ensued and an alarm was triggered so loud it attracted every Infected in a 100 mile radius, Francis was back in the fight. With the group now together, Francis was a part of the escape via the train - witnessing Bill leave behind the Doctor and the Soldiers to fight battles they could not win - not taking the outcome as seriously as Zoey, and not being as driven as she was to keep fighting the Infected.

Despite opposing the plan to escape to the Florida Keys, Francis still obeyed and even helped bring Zoey around to the idea moments before a twist of fate saw the last bridge in town getting jammed on its way up as they raised it. Bill would be the one to give his life to save Francis, Zoey and Louis as the three survivors made their way to the island - safe from the Infected, from the army, from CEDA.

Personality[]

Francis seems to have very, very contrasting energy from scenario to scenario. In a casual conversation, he is sharp witted and always looks to establish himself as the dominant one when it comes to dispensing insults, jokes and taking credit. Though he does have a bullying streak in him, especially aimed at Louis and Bill, he does also seem to fall in line and cut the crap when ordered to do so - whether he likes it or not.

Though he'd sooner die than admit it, he does care a great deal for his team. He will mourn them all in death, admitting that he was coming around even to Louis - the one he is the most hard on - in the instance of his death. This is cemented in The Sacrifice and The Passing campaigns following Louis' injury and Bill's death. Although Francis teases Louis about the nature of the wound, he is loyal to a point of stubbornness about undoing the work that resulted in said injury and death. Bill's death hits hard, as Francis is the first and only member of the team to volunteer going after him, though Zoey explains why this is not a good idea.

Francis' most significant characteristic is his brawler mentality. There's not much he won't at least initially face head on - as seen when the team first encounter a Tank in the intro, when Francis was the only one who stood still and stared down the beast. He also stays behind to get his licks in before being overpowered.

That said, he does have a shameless side to him - telling the police straight up that he fully intended to run from the scene of the crime, as well as suggesting everyone except Louis should run from the insane and grievously wounded Lt Mora. He is also the most forthcoming about threatening Church Guy in Riverside before he turns into a Special Infected, stating such charming abuse as "I'm gonna tear that bell down and shove it up your ass!" despite really holding none of the cards in a negotiation standoff.

Arsenal[]

Equipment[]

  • Autoshotgun: Francis' main weapon of choice, fires 10 shots per clip, with 128 additional rounds.
  • Dual pistols: Each pistol has 15 shots each, and the weapons themselves never run out of ammo.
  • Hunting rifle: Francis' main weapon of choice in Left 4 Dead 2, fires 15 shots per magazine, with an additional 150 shots as ammunition.
  • Molotov: Covers a large surface area in flames for 15-17 seconds.
  • Pipe bomb: A grenade that emits a high pitched beeping sound to lure large groups of infected before detonating.
  • Bile jar: A sample of Boomer vomit that when thrown, lures large groups of infected to its point of contact. If the bile lands on an infected, the horde will swarm and attack them.
  • Medkit: A First Aid kit that heals up to 80 health. Far and away Francis' best healing item.
  • Pain pills: Ibuprofen pills that restores 50 temporary health.
  • Adrenaline: A shot that restores 25 temporary health, and grants Francis a speed boost to his movement and actions such as healing.
  • Incendiary ammo: Grants Francis a full magazine of ammunition that sets the target on fire.
  • Explosive ammo: Grants Francis a full magazine of ammunition capable of complete dismemberment of the target.

Weaknesses[]

  • Despite his claims, Francis is not indestructible; he is very much still a human and is still very vulnerable to orthodox means of killing a man. Bullets, fire, melee attacks, fall damage, explosions, claws, punches or any supernatural means would still be effective on him.
  • His weapons, while upgradable, are still relatively orthadox so a durable enemy can be quite hard to put down.
  • While by no means the stupidest, he's not exactly a master strategist and can be quite short sighted in decision making
    • Giving the soldiers at Millhaven attitude which earned him imprisonment and a beatdown.
    • Giving the same soldiers more grief while imprisoned in a vain effort to lure them in the cell and overpower them for their guns.
    • Refusing to help the Left 4 Dead 2 survivors to lower the bridge in Bill's honour - though he would soon change his mind.
  • Is more effective in a group than as an individual - not to be mistaken as "Completely inept on his own" as is so often labelled of characters in a group dynamic.

Trivia[]

  • The pub Francis is in during The Sacrifice comic has a poster of Dead Rising 2's Chuck Greene on the wall, as a part of the two series references to each other.
  • In the original beta stages of Left 4 Dead 1, Francis and Zoey were going to be in a relationship to some degree.
  • In the XBOX version of Left 4 Dead 2, in the DLC for the original campaigns, Francis will switch from using the auto shotgun to instead favouring scoped weapons.
  • Francis will claim to have "Insulaphobia" which he wrongly states to be the fear of islands (it's actually a fear of being isolated). It is also ironic as he has a dream where he is very much at peace on his own island which is boarded by a ship full of bikini models doing promotional work for a new beer.
  • He also had a Lambda symbol shaped scar on his head, a reference of course to Half-Life.
