History[]

Sonya has a long history of serving in the Earthrealm military, like her father before her, and she even became inducted into its Special Forces division. Already aware of the threat Outworld posed to the planet, Sonya intended on investigating its Mortal Kombat tournament as an outsider; however, she was caught up in the action when her comrade Jax Briggs was taken hostage, and forced to be a participant by the host Shang Tsung. Here, she proved her worth to several of Earthrealm's champions, including the thunder god Raiden and action star Johnny Cage.

After the defeat of Outworld, and against the rise of new threats, Sonya eventually rose to the ranks of General in the Special Forces. However, her commitment to her job over all else isolated her from her family, including her then-husband Johnny and daughter Cassie Cage. However, they were able to pull together to help defeat the disgraced Elder God Shinnok; having matured just as much as Cage had, Sonya finally mellowed out. While she still took her job defending Earth seriously, she was able to remain on good terms with her ex-husband, and trained Cassie into becoming one of the finest soldiers Earthrealm had ever seen.

Personality[]

Sonya is a no-nonsense woman who prefers not to mess around. With a tendency to take a direct approach to everything, sometimes punching first and asking questions later, she is the polar opposite of her sarcastic, goofball future husband. But in the end, the fact that she married Johnny Cage and truly does love her family shows that there is a soft person underneath. It is simply buried underneath a fierce devotion to protecting humanity, and a deep-seated hatred of notorious criminals like Kano.

Sonya was the only female character in the first Mortal Kombat, which caused controversy as to how the game's violence could be directed towards a woman.
Possibly because of the above hesitance with fighting a woman, Sonya was the least-played character in the original game, but has since become a fan favourite and series staple.
